DAGGERS PUNK PRESENTS
UK SUBS with support from
DUN2DEF,INSANE SOCIETY, DANGERS CLOSE, TEN O SEVENS, MISPELT 2.0

MISPELT 2.0

The last time I saw this punk quartet was at The Appleby, Burton-On-Trent, when the headlined the Friday Night of Breast Fest Weekend 2009, and on that occasion put in such a stella performance that it earned them a nod from me for the best live performance of 2009.

So, having built them up, would they live up to the billing? Of course they did!

Having the unenviable honour of being first band up on a six band bill that is being headlined by the UK SUBS MISPELT 2.0 took to the stage and played as if they had a crowd of hundreds watching them. A lot of this stems from the fact they only know one way to play and thats fast, furious and with fun! A the few punters in the Bridge House early doors had a real treat and gave the band a very warm and richly deserved reception. (PITY MORE WEREN'T THERE - although Mr Harper was in residence so if the good and great can do it!)

GEN (VOX) is never still and probably spends more time off the stage and in the crowd whipping them in to frenzy. The dual vocal between Gen and DUNK (BASS & VOX) works brilliantly and the interplay is clever. Behind the kit KEV (DRUMS) lays the foundations which knits perfectly with the bass lines and STEVE'S guitar work is no mere icing its the ribbon, little sliver balls and the cherry on top of the cake.

Tonights Plait D' Jour

SAY GOODBYE - great way to open a show!
FRIENDS LIKE YOU - who indeed needs enemies. "You got nuthin to say and you're saying it too loud" we all know somebody like this especially the sort that "you threw your toys right out of the pram, first out the dorr when the shit hits the fan!" Always a favourite and no different this evening.

PETROL BOMB - An anthem for an angry generation. A warning to the establishment to
give us a fair deal or face the consequences.
NATIONAL INSECURITY - love this song and tonight it was made even more special as it was dedicated to myself and Woodstock Punkrock (GUITAR - BORN TO DESTRUCT) my tag team review partner and best mate!

PARASITE
SOME THING FOR THE WEEKEND
DEAD MAN WALKING
ALIEN
SPECIAL BREW AND METHADONE

All the above being great songs delivered full tilt and enough to get those in the pit moving and shaking
FOXTROT OSCAR - My favourite MTPZ song. Fast paced. Great vocal exchanges. It hits you like a runaway train.
TRISHA - a modern day fable about day time tv!
JUNK FOOD GENERATION - the bands signature song and one that encapsulates what this band is about. Another favourite!

A great performance from a great band and if only there were great a deal more people there to watch them. A band that plays for the love it, they have fun and they want you to have, and 1st on, last on, somewhere in the middle, they don't care, they just want to perform.

Having made probably the longest journey down to the Bridge House in their old faithful van RED DWARF to be on first they were still their when Woodstock and I were leaving!

The first of many Mispelt 2.0 gigs I hope to see this year!

So if this lot are coming to a venue near you go and see them, I promise you you'll enjoy it! I hear tale that the band are soon to be recording material for a full length CD, and shall be pre ordering my copy NOW!

CD REVIEW

STILL KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS

(A Protest Against Lethargy)

SPIT & SAWDUST

Deadlamb Records & Fungalpunk

There are, unfortunately, those people who profess to be as punk as fuck and yet only ever turn up to gigs in time to see the "names" from "back in the day" play.

One can't help feeling sorry for these poor souls, who, if they only stopped long enough to take their heads out of their arses and smell the real world for once they might actually realise what the fuck they have been missing all these years.

UNDER DOG PUNK is

(a) the life blood of the punk movement

(b) here, now, and happening

(c) where all these big names once started.

So! Man Up! BUY A COPY of this fine CD which showcases 23 bloody good reasons why under dog punk is worth bothering with - turn the volume to loud and feast your ears on this lot!

Glasgow based 3 piece THE MURDERBURGERS' - YOU'RE A PRICK kicks things off and it arrives a bit like opening a window on a hot summers afternoon, when in flies an angry wasp that buzzes around your head, really getting on your tits, but by the time you find a newspaper to deal with this little 'prick' its flown back out the window. 1 minute and 8 seconds that goes a long way to define the essence of punk. Excellent!

ARTHRITIC FOOT SOLDIERS from the North West, are next with ATTITUDE. The heavy bass and scratch intro set the song up nicely as it leads in to a nice simple chanty verse and then seems add a touch of harmony that wouldn't be out of place on a US TV SITCOM THEME TUNE before reverting back to the chanty verse, but wait, and then, BANG!, in comes the demonic metal sheering vocals that the opening of the song promises. I defy anyone not to at least tap your foot to this one.

FIRST TIME RIOT - AGENDA 21. This outfit from the midlands bring a touch of street to the mix with this slice of political' punk. Simple but effective drum and bass drive this song forward with a vocal delivery that hardly stops to draw breath. Honest and decent!

Proving it not just the Brits that can do this under dog stuff Belgium Hardcore Punksters PANDAZ, donate DON'T LIKE to the party. If the Murderburgers were like a single wasp, then this friends, is the WHOLE fucking nest come to seek revenge! Rasping rumbling bass, sits a top some frantic yet basic drums, distorted guitar adds the texture for the maniacal vocal to gnash and grind over.

Then it back over Hadrians Wall as the PRAIRE DUGZ give us LOCKDOWN. Pure Punk Perfection. Definitely my track of the CD so far (OK I know I am only 5 tracks in). Made from 100% pure ingredients and boy, you can taste the difference!

To prove its not just the north, or in fact the boys, that have all the fun Cambridge based FREEDOM FACTION are female fronted quartet that mixes youth with vast experience as they invite you to COME UP AND GET IT. One of the bands more 'pop' punk numbers but still a worthy addition to this already impressive collection of under dog finery. The chorus gives you a glimpse of their angstier side.

Hold the phone! 2 SICK MONKEYS - WHY. Dispelling that myth that only Honda cars come from ..Swindon.. these 2 very diseased primates grab you by the throat and give you a swift knee in the bollocks to get your attention. Heavy Metal Punk Drum n Bass style. A song that asks the eternal question WHY? ANIMAL MAGIC!(is there a track on here better than this one, more than likely so lets press on).

THE DISTRAKTED are responsible for the next musical mugging with MONSTER EATS THE PILOT. Don't worry about the title just enjoy some rather tasty full hardcore metallic punk served up by these Mancunian herberts. The singer must gargle razor blades and grit for two hours each day to keep his voice in such fine fettle.

In a move probably designed to protect us from complete aural overload we are served up some good ol' rock n roll punkiness with CAN'T SEE by THE ADJUSTERS who are 5 piece from ..Wigan.. whose sound belies their tender years.

With young bands of this quality doing the rounds, the under dog scene is safe for a year or two yet on the talent front at least. This is why its so important that we stop apathy in its tracks!

The thought provoking IF I DIE TONIGHT from Lancastrian thinking mans punk outfit FLAT BACK FOUR is next and deals with the thorny issue of depression, and does it honestly, with sensitivity and it’s a damn good song too! The bands line up may change more frequently than Beckham’s hairstyle more but the quality of their product never does.

51st STATE - HOODIES The second drum and bass punk outfit on the CD and also from the south west. This is a 100 meter sprint of a tune. From the B of Bang to the finish line it’s one breath, eyes out, arm pumping mayhem and answer to the question just how many words can you fit in to a song lasting 1:20.

We've reached the halfway stage and providing the half time entertainment are Milton Keynes finest sons CITIZEN KEYNE with SATURDAYS HEROES a song about the sport of the masses for the masses. Terrace chant chorus lines delivered to perfection. In fact the whole song is a master class of street punk with oi pretentions. It is also the first of two tracks by the band on this compilation. If you thought this was good, wait 'til you hear the other one. NO!! WAIT!!!

THE SCABS a Cumbrian Hard Core Punk 4 piece bring us the light and fluffy (not) SEXUAL DEVIANT as it tells its tale of unpleasantness. Nuthin fancy, nuthin flash, just solid, first rate punk.

Flyin’ the Flag for the Oi Boyz, CHURCHILL - STREETS OF FEAR. When something is as good as this, the product can stand by itself and needs no help from the likes of me. Enjoy!

The second of three female fronted bands on this CD MISPELT 2.0 are a phenomenal band. I say female fronted its almost dual vocals between that hyperactive vixen GEN, and DUNC (bass). FOXTROT OSCAR is an absolute treasure

of a song and gives a decent glimpse of what this band are all about. It’s almost as tiring listening to them as watching them play live!

Intro of the album has got to go THE KINGCROWS - SEX OUI with its waltz time fair ground sounding beginning and then the band launch in to a very catchy piece of rock n roll based punk. This ..Leeds.. based GLAM PUNK ROCK have a few

miles on the clock between them and that experience shows in this highly polished jewel of a track.

ILL FATED RIOT brings us

FIRE THE GUNS. Full on, balls out, hardcore, garage, punk neatly sums up what the band are about but that is to gloss over the rest of it, take a listen to this track and listen to the changes in style and tempo and how expertly they knit together. This isn't a case of,’oh lets stick a bit of ska in the bridge’, it’s there because it works and needs to be there. Listen a few times and you'll find something new each time. Clever!

Blackpool may be famous for its Tower, Ballroom and scabby donkeys, but ladies and gentlemen please be upstanding for THE SENTON BOMBS. One of those bands that cross the divide between metal and punk with ease and can delight both audiences. JERSEY DOLLS is a demonstration of some fine grungy rock n roll with driving drum beats, thumping bass line, fret melting guitar and awesome (note the first use of this word in this review) vocal delivery.

The last of our trio of our female fronted punk bands BORN TO DESTRUCT present us with TAKE, as we enter the final furlong on this fine release. An excellent example of pop punk and one that proves having a female 'singer' can work. Fun, catchy, and definitely worth TAK(E)ing home!

MOST LIKELY TO FAIL is the one thing this ..Doncaster.. based band will never do. One of the finest bands on the punk circuit and this offering KILLING TIME (ALT VERSION) backs this up. Another song that needs little help from me! Just listen!

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE DARK AGES is the request from metal punk ska-sters RISING STRIKE. Switches between full on metal and more laid back ska rhythms intelligently and the vocal delivery is full on and in your face. Nice!

3 BLACK DWARFS are a youthful and rather talented quartet and FIGHT BACK is a good representation of what the boys can produce. Plenty of the angst of the ‘angry young men’ of their generation is on display in this song. A dark roasted, bitter, nugget of angst filled punk! Magic!

I don't care how hackneyed the phrase SAVE THE BEST TIL LAST is because although the 22 songs before it can stand on their own two feet and are excellent examples of the breadth and depth of this genre called punk, the SAS BONUS PICK and the second CITIZEN KEYNE offering STAND PROUD is 24 KARAT PUNK. The ultimate anthem of the under dog punk scene. The tenet of the song is timeless and it could have been written in any of the four decades spanned by punk. Magnificent! (If you think this is good on CD you have to hear it live as that’s when the song really comes to life!)

So my lord’s, ladies and gentleman, there you have it, my review of one of the best compilation albums I have ever listened to. A CD that celebrates the fantastic wealth of talent the under dog scene has to offer and full explanation of why you need to get of your arse and get yourself to gig and support bands like these!

Fungal Dave and the team at Deadlamb records, I reckon you've got a winner here!

Breast Fest 2009
Friday 2nd Oct 2009
The Appleby
BURTON-ON-TRENT

MISPELT{TWOPOINTZERO} + BORN TO DESTRUCT + SIX WEEKS FALLING

Slightly off the beaten track The Appleby is a venue that you go to on purpose as I would imagine the passing trade is a little on the thin side.

So after a Friday night trek up the A14 and M6 and the M42 it was with the anticipation of playing a new town, new venue and a new crowd.

Having arrived just after RED DWARF (the Mispelt battle bus) had 'landed' we were greated with by an exuberant and hyper active chap (with roots closer to the Tyne then the Trent if I am any judge of accents!) who turned out to be the sound guy. The reason for his state of excitement was at one point earlier in the evening it looked like NO BANDS were actually going to be playing!!! Well there were, and they did!

Playing host to Breast Fest 2009 - a whole weekend, kicking off on the Friday evening, of fund raising for two excellent causes - Teenage Cancer Trust and Breast Cancer Awareness, The Appleby had to gone to town and decorated the the place with ribbons bunting and balloons and made me aware of one of the more rare 'fears' Globophbia.

So with the bands present - the sound checks took place at a pretty laid back pace and having a pretty sturdy PA rig all the amps were miked up as was the drum kit so these a little time to get through but they were completed and the first band kicked things off around 10pm.
BTD left the audience (by this time containing several members of the Local? bike chapter, and one or two of more gothic persuasion) nicely warmed up wanting more...

MISPELT{TWOPOINTZERO} duly obliged with another full on, in yer face, balls out, adrenaline fuelled 40 mins (or so) of the finest punk mayhem. Gen had the 'boyz' in the crowd eating out of her hand. The fact she was able to go round the entire pub on one of her run arounds meant that she could be in front of them one second and then behind them the next.

Poor lads! Speaking of poor lads. Must mention the 6' 3" 14 y.o. with hair down to his arse and a leather coat down to the floor that insisted on head banging non stop for about 15 mins and then deciding he needed the loo trued to walk the 15 feet across the room to the door thru to the loo's it was hilarious. He staggered and I swear his eyes were spinning round in the sockets like in a cartoon - priceless. JUNK FOOD GENERATION brought the set and the first leg of Breast Fest to a close around 00:40.

By the end of the first evening the charities were better to the tune of at least £600-£700 so here's hoping that they made around £2000 over the whole event which would be an immense achievement.

The evening was rounded off in perfect style by sharing pizza and swapping stories with MTPZ - thanks to The Appleby for the Pizza's they were stunning!!!

We left Burton around 1am and headed back to Cambridge as a gig in Kettering on Saturday evening was beckoning, as was Halifax for RED DWARF and the MTPZ gang. Six Weeks Falling only had the bar at The Appleby to get to!!!!

Another amazing nite! Cheers to everyone involved. Thank you so much. Oh and to the tight fisted wank stains that refused to come in because there was a £3 charge - get over yourselves.

MISPELT(TWOPOINTZERO) - Junkfood Generation EP: Dunno about the last part of the band's name but the four tunes on here are pretty damn good street punk numbers. It's also good to see a band that write decent lyrics too! For me the best song is the opener 'Junkfood Generation' with some solid musicianship and tight vocals from Jen. While the other three numbers aren't in the same league as 'Junkfood Generation' they're still tight and catchy and certainly worthy of being heard especially 'Foxtrot Oscar'. In fact it's a shame more British Punk bands don't make more of an effort with writing good lyrics and playing catchy tunes. 7.5/10

THE SAS TOUR

STOCKPORT, THE THATCHED HOUSE - 3 DAY BASH - 16th Jan - 18th Jan 2009

DAY TWO (17th Jan 2009)

Mispelt 2.0 had traffic problems and came flustered and hassled but eventually calmed down and got up and produced an absolute fuckin' corker. For those of you who keep up with all things fungal you will probably know that this lot got performance of the year last year by yours truly and on this evidence they are in the hunt again. A good band indeedy but since that elfin creature Gen jumped on board things have just got better and better.

Nerves were her biggest bugbear early on but gradually she is overcoming these naughty niggles and imposing herself oh so gently into the driving seat. A voice of a roaring banshee this bitch from hell can bellow with the best of em' and I mean all that in the nicest possible way. It is quite helpful for her to have 3 darn good musicians behind her and a catalogue of classic tunes at her disposal so who is the lucky one then? Overall this was superb stuff and to pick out one song is bloody hard. Eeny, meeny miny mo - er 'Petrolbomb' because it quite simply ROCKS!

THE SAS TOUR

BRADFORD, THE MANNVILLE ARMS - 8th November 2008

It seemed as though it had been a long time since I last did a gig in Bradford and so when the chance came to put a gig on at this new venue (to me anyway) I took it with both hands grasping. Bradford is always a struggle but I have a soft spot for the area and have met some cracking people over there and believe there is a scene to be revitalised. News of Rancid playing just down the road did nothing for my confidence but hey that's how the scene goes and the obsession with names and the US exports is beyond my control. The SAS fungalisation continues and what will be will be.

Myself, good lady and young lass (all now Bradford connoisseurs) found the gaff after only a couple of wrong turnings which in itself is some kind of record for the mazy town. The Exchange used to cause us no end of logistical problems and the Gasworks wasn't much better. Both great venues but tucked away in the elusive crotch of the northern town....

...Next up Mispelt 2.0 and after their recent quality outing in the murky depths of Manchester, which gained some unwarranted criticism from self- appointed musical maestros in the supposedly music capital of the north (feel free to laugh out loud) this lot had nothing whatsoever to prove to me as I think they are one of the best bands on the circuit. I came, I expected and...fuckin' hell I was well and truly blown away!

This was a total orgasmic delight and one which I really needed as punk lately has left a lot to be desired with it's oh so cosy self-embracing, unconcinving attitude. My oh my this is what it's all about and all four players here worked as a team and gained victory as a team in what was an inpeccable set.

Dunk on bass was his charming self and really works well alongside that elfin mistress, Gen, who has the voice of a banshee and the delightful look of a kid in a sweet shop. The drums are always quality and come via a rockin' guy called Kev who is as good a company as you good wish for as is Steve the much under-rated guitarist who oozes talent and has a crackin' attitude and temperament. Good company, good tunes and good for the scene and this was my annual highlight by far and each and every song was a veritable classic.

My young daughter Katie has been a fan of Mispelt 2.0 for a few years now and this was her initial viewing so I was really hoping the band could give her what she expected (high standards you see in the fungal household). Well looking at her face and listening to her after they did just that and a whole lot more. 'Superhero', 'Foxtrot Oscar', Petrol Bomb 2008', 'Dead Man Walking', 'Trisha', 'Drive It Like You Stole It' and the remarkable 'Junkfood Generation' - wow - amazing! Afterwards I had to personally thank all members for one helluva memorable set and for getting this fungal fuckers head out of the doldrums as regards the scene. This is why I am a punk - nothing more and nothing less - just a guy who loves it 100% and my true thanks go to Mispelt 2.0 for helping remind me of that - Cheers and beers as they say.

Point again must be made to the crowd who gave quite excellent appreciation to every song from every band and this is what can turn a night into a real winner. Bradford be proud and thank you to everyone for attending this. Cheers to the band for giving myself and family some stunning entertainment and cheers to the gaff for giving me the chance. Hopefully more of the same again please with a bigger crowd and a bigger noise. Hey and cheers to the soundguy for hanging on in there - many appreciations and of course to punk underground peddlar Leon aka Punkined for his help with promotion and his valuable support.

Mispelt appear in internationally distributed "Band Name Book"

Hello Mispelt, I bought your Drive It Like You Stole It CD recently and really like it. I’d like to feature your band and the artwork from that CD cover in The Band Name Book, which I’m in the final stages of writing for Firefly Books.

Thousands of bands are mentioned in this book, from 1960 to 2008, and from over 30 countries, but I single out one indie band per page and write a few extra lines about them (the band’s location and a quick note on the origin or meaning of their name, or an interesting bit of trivia or cool CD title, whatever makes the best reading). I also include a full-color image of a CD cover or poster art with the band’s name on it.

I would formally credit the artist(s) responsible for the image, as well as note your copyright as specified on your CD. It's free promo in an internationally distributed book: the book gets cool art; the contributing bands get a feature spot.

Some 200 bands have contributed CD covers or other artwork for the book. I hope I can count you in. I’ve posted the current book cover and some page-spread mock-ups in the Pics area on my band’s myspace site along with some sample scans submitted by other bands.

All the best,

Noel Hudson

Editorial Reviews

A big, open-it-anywhere book created for music fans and pop-culture followers of all ages, The Band Name Book explains how (or where) the best-named bands in history got their names. Those names are profound, clever, silly, provocative or downright obscure. This entertaining book is full of information and trivia about bands from the dawn of rock 'n' roll right up to today's Internet-based independents.

The Beatles are here, as well as Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails and the Goo Goo Dolls. But the best fun is found with rock history's lesser-known groups, in Web-savvy contemporary bands, and with true originals. Among their names:

Atomic Rooster Arctic Monkeys The Lemonheads The Formaldebrides The Soup Dragons Pavlov's Woody Arcade Fire Big Al and the Kaholics Hectic Watermelon Smorgasborgnine.

The Band Name Book includes entries on thousands of bands from more than 30 countries, divided into dozens of entertaining and irreverent categories with special notes on name origins, genres and best album titles. There are profiles of notable bands. And there's even a list of "Names Still Available" for each category.

Review Junkfood Generation Fungal Punk

From the opening slash of confident guitar to the final burst of this CD you don't getting nothing less than 100% choice punk rock. This 4 track piece from a recently renamed and rejuvenated band is a prime example of how an outfit should never be afraid to shuffle the pack and try to deal out a new winning hand. In this game of punk rock poker The Mispelt are now Mispelt 2.0 and have equipped themselves with a female vocalist flushed with ensnaring inflection and competent experience. The mix is magnificent and the outcome of a 4 ace run is just reward indeed.

'Junkfood Generation' is a tremendous opening track and reborn from its prior life in which it masqueraded under the name 'Better Off Dead' for me this revamped version improves on what was a great song and results in a veritable classic. It's one of those moments that galls me to the very epicentre of my punk rock soul as this could end up one of those songs that could be another on the list of overlooked belters. I fuckin' hope not and highly recommend this gargantuan punk rock moment to all and sundry who consider themselves ingrained with the spirit. From the commencing bars the trip is of excellent composition and each and every note contributes to a highly organised song throbbing with style and talented application. The entwining of the female and male vocals is of such stature you feel that the pursuing tracks will be of the same standard and guess what, they are!

Smooth bass opens 'Friends Like You' and is accompianed by true guitar, a hefty drum beat and the expected she-gob snarl. Again you have 4 components complimenting each other as well as generating enough opposition to create a cock-solid sound of the highest order. This is a band on productive overdrive at the moment and it is more than apparent we are dealing with more than adequate players to say the least.

The high fuelled urgency of 'Foxtrot Oscar' is well timed and the duelling double sexed vocals triumph in this amphetamine rush that ends with a burst of climactic rage and leaves a very sweet taste indeed.

'Petrol Bomb 2008' closes this 4 tracker (which is nowhere near enough for me - aaaggghhhh) and is once again a fuckin' treat. The chorus is an absolute peach and finishes off a winning track in utterly fantastic style. A few tangents are thrown in and all succeed rather than confuse and again reflects genuine ability.

A real class band here and one which has graced the SAS Tour and hopefully will do so on many more occasions. The argument I promote about people listening to the same old shit is refuelled here as with bands like this around there is no reason to be stuck in the past. Over and over again as a reviewer I am uncovering proper punk rock played with passion and convincing expertise and here we have one of the best examples of this. If you can't be arsed to buy this CD after reading this then please feel free to blow your brains out and slump on your sofa of apathy because I really don't know how I can help you

SAS (SLIT AND SAWDUST) Halifax 7 bander 26/04/08

So to the headline act - The Mispelt 2.0 and lucky me was having the good fortune to be the promoter to give them their first gig in this new and exciting format. A sneak preview at a recent SAS whet my appetite just nicely and gave promise to a revitalised band ready to be reckoned with. Boy how right my instincts were!

This was a perfect headliner and the band were really functioning as a quality unit despite this being an embryonic outing. Quality bass lines were escorted with some superb melodic guitar work and a waterfall of rat-a-tat drum work. A talented trio and now with the supremely excellent frontlady this is one of the best bands so far this year that I have had the pleasure of viewing. Despite the emphasis on melody there is a superfluity of attitude here and each song is an individual pleasure. Tonight I was almost knocked of my feet by the metamorphical result of that classic ditty 'Drive It Like You Stole It' - wow! Also a song called 'Superhero' stood out from an array of high class offerings and really did make my night.

Overall a positively excellent evening with again an overspill of talent on show at a free SAS gig. Many a statement is said by the underdog and duly ignored by the critical masses of the punk scene but on evidence like this one must ask how much longer can these bands be ignored.

SAS (spit and sawdust) Thatched House Stockport 12/04/08

"A band I was really anticipating tonight were The Mispelt and they didn’t disappoint. Very tight and with oodles of melody this quality unit breezed through their set with professional ease and ‘Drive It Like You Stole It’ was just fuckin’ awesome. It’s all change in the Mispelt camp with a line-up and name change imminent [MISPELT 2.0]. A sneak preview was given tonight when the frontlady let rip on a couple of songs and ‘WOW’ what a difference it made. Already impressed I had no idea where further improvements could be made but this bold risk I feel will pay massive rewards and the future is looking mighty rosy for this band. I have them on again in two weeks at Halifax [26/04/08] and am looking forward to it no end where I hope the frontgirl does the whole show. A quality band soaked in experience and a must see."
